Drying sheds lighting and electrical load assessment

The Brickworks Museum appointed Salvis to carry out an electrical load assessment of the site and design new LED lighting for Drying Sheds 1 and 2. Salvis surveyed the existing electrical infrastructure and monitored the site's demand. That showed how much capacity was available and which upgrades future loads would need.

Salvis then developed a full LED lighting design, with detailed drawings and lighting layouts, to improve lighting performance and energy efficiency in the drying sheds. Working closely with a local electrical contractor, Salvis supported the project from design through to installation.

The building was a particularly rewarding project to work on, as the new lighting scheme has helped to restore and enhance the character of the space, highlighting architectural features and bringing greater definition to the walls and flooring.

Challenges

  • Existing electrical capacity
  • Significant phase imbalance
  • Ageing electrical installation
  • Future additional loads
  • Existing building constraints
  • Integrating new lighting with existing distribution

Lessons learned

01Measure before adding load

Two weeks of monitoring provided real site demand data before any additional electrical loads were considered.

02Balance existing infrastructure first

Salvis identified an opportunity to redistribute approximately 40A from L1 across L2 and L3 before considering more substantial changes.

03Plan future capacity early

Larger future additions, including the two drying sheds, were identified as needing an incoming supply upgrade and further engagement with the DNO.
